Living on a Budget!

Happy Monday!!!

Do you budget or do you just coast through your finances paycheck to paycheck?

I am a budget person! I have spreadsheets broke down with monthly expenses and expense by paycheck. I have broke it down very detailed for us, so we can see where our money needs to go each month.

I was not always a person who lived on a budget. I think it was about 6 or 7 years ago when this all finally clicked for me. I started doing spreadsheets to see where all our money was going. Gooooood lord what a wake up call! I was tired of living with debt and decided enough was enough. I really got on a budget kick 4 years ago.

I started spreadsheets of what debt we had, I came up with a plan based on each paycheck and I got busy. In one year I paid off around $30K in debt. It was insane! I have made it a mission for us not to get in ourselves into debt like that either. The year I got out of a lot of debt was a strange year we were able to bring in extra money. We do not have an extra $30K in our budget whatsoever. If people saw what we actually bring and our financial status they would be in shock.

Living on a budget means you can't have every nice thing out there. If you are making a million bucks a year, you may be able to afford a lot more things than I can on a much tighter budget.

Lets talk about how I set up our budget.

1. Write down everything you need to pay in a month

  • Rent/Mortgage
  • Electricity
  • Insurance - car, home, life or any type of insurance that isn't deducted from your paycheck
  • Cell phone
  • Cable/Internet
  • Gas for your vehicle
  • Groceries
  • Garbage
  • Water
  • Car payment
  • Student loans
  • Child care
  • Eating out
  • Gym membership
  • Amazon purchases
  • Target
  • Credit card payments
  • Coffee, lunches, date nights, nails, whatever else you spend money on regularly add it to your list
I list each item out and put a dollar amount beside each one. As an example your electrical bill might be more in one season than another. For us we spend more on AC in the summer, so I take the higher amount and spread that out between both pay periods. If your electrical bill runs around $300 per month in the summer then you need to allocate $150 per pay period for electricity.

We eat out once per week. Art takes food for breakfast and lunch each day. G packs a lunch for school. I eat out maybe every few months for lunch. Our eating out budget is minimal, but our grocery budget could be a lot more than yours. When we eat out it's around $60-75 per meal. I can buy groceries to feed us for 5 days with that amount of money.

I do my grocery shopping at Aldi, Walmart pick up, and Costco. Eggs at Walmart are around $7 for 5 dozen. The same eggs are $9-10 at Costco. The nice thing with Walmart pick up is I can place my order, drive up, they load it and off I go home. I don't buy extra things I might want or things the kids want me to buy. I am able to buy mostly organic items doing this at a cheaper cost.

That is how I start my budget.

2. Break out your expenses by pay period

If you get paid once a month you don't have anymore work to do. If you get paid every 2 weeks then here is where this part comes into play.

I put the paycheck amount at the top of the spreadsheet. I take the monthly categories and list them under the paycheck amount. Then I decide how to break it out. We spend around $500 a month on groceries. I break that down by $250 per pay period. I try to only shop once every 2 weeks to keep up within budget.

Our electric bill I break that out by pay period and I pay it each pay period. When we get paid I take $150 and apply it to the electric bill. This way we stay on track with paying each bill timely. Now I can't do this with our garbage bill. They will only let you pay it in full. I just know we need to set $XX aside each pay period for garbage.

3. Are you living within your means?

Once you break it all down do you have any extra money left? If you are in the negative then you need to figure out what you can eliminate. If you are living on credit cards that is a bigger problem.

I truly believe you need to live within your means. That means being able to afford your lifestyle with the money you are bringing in. There are plenty of times I would much rather go out to eat then cook, but I also don't think putting that on a credit card is a good idea.

4. Are you planning for the future?

Are you putting money into a 401K or IRA? This is a VERY important thing to be doing. Art is older than me and will be ready to retire in the next 10 years. When I met him he had very little set up for retirement. I had him increase his 401K contributions right away. Over the past 14 years it has really added up. We don't even consider that money. The money is taken out of his paycheck each pay period and put into his 401K. Each year we increase the amount that is put away.

I am not sure what the 401K rules are not, but back when I started working I couldn't contribute until I was 21. I was so annoyed by that. Here I was in a career and I couldn't even contribute to my 401K. The month after I turned 21 I started contributing.

Time goes by quickly! If you don't start saving when you are young you will not start saving when you are old. Social Security might not be there for us when we are 67 or however old you will need to be to collect it.

We all like things. There is nothing wrong with that. I just feel for me and my family things we have to buy on credit aren't that great. I don't even get excited over a new car because I am like that costs so much money and I hate payments.

DIY Letter Beaded Bracelets

One of the trends are these adorable gold beaded letter bracelets. I really wanted one with each of the boys name on them. ShopBop has them for $36 and up. Etsy has them too, but they are still pricey.

I was going to buy the gold beads at Michael's, but if you don't buy the real gold beads the color starts to rub off quickly. I decided to take a different route and make mine with colored beads. I saw the Dollar Tree had some seed beads and letter beads.

Each package of the seed beads was $1 and the letter beads were $1. I spent $3 on beads total. I also have enough beads to make probably 10 more bracelets. I barely put a dent in the one package of blue beads.  I bought the elastic string on Amazon for $3.

I decided to make the bracelets while Cashy was napping one day. G had a great time making his own bracelet and playing with the beads. He asked me to get his sensory bin down while I finished. We both sat at the table chatting away with our projects.

I tied the elastic in a knot and then put clear nail polish over the knot. I tried to pull the bracelet to put it on before I put the clear nail polish and the bracelet exploded all over the dining room. I know there are beads hiding still after G and I both searched the floor on our hands and knees. Take it from me. Seal it with nail polish before you put them on. lol

I spent a total of $6 on supplies. I have plenty of supplies left that I could make numerous other bracelets.

The boys love these bracelets. They each point to their names and smile. G will tell me each letter from the bracelets. They are so proud that I wear their names on my wrist.

Daily Essentials at the Dollar Tree

Do you shop at the Dollar Tree?  I go about once every other month to stock up on our daily essential things we need around the house. I realized about 15 years ago that the Dollar Tree carries a lot of stuff that is used on a daily basis at a much cheaper price.

I buy all the ziplock type baggies at the Dollar Tree. There have been times I have purchased them at Target or Costco. When I compare the prices it is so much cheaper to just go to the Dollar Tree. I normally buy the off brands of baggies, but they were out this last time. Pandemic hoarders shelves must be overflowing lol

On my trip to the Dollar Tree here are some of the items I get:

1. Snack baggies - 1
2. Sandwich baggies - 3
3. Quart baggies - 1
4. Gallon baggies - 3
5. Rubber gloves - 2
6. Sponges - 3
7. Flossers - 2
8. Napkins - 3
9. Paper towels - 2
10. Parchment paper - 2

I usually have to go to the Dollar Tree because we need more baggies. We haven't been going through as many now that G isn't in school. For the most part I try not to send a lot of baggies in lunches. It is usually cheaper to buy things in bulk and put them in a baggy. I also freeze a lot of food, so I use baggies to freeze stuff.

The only time we use paper towels is when the cleaning lady comes, so 2 rolls last us 2 months or more. We use cloth towels instead of paper towels. I have probably 20 towels that last me a week. We use them to dry our hands, clean up messes and wipe up any water. I didn't grow up with paper towels, so it feels wasteful to me to use paper towels.

I wash dishes in rubber gloves otherwise my hands get so dry. I like the pink ones! One pair will last me awhile! I just like to have a second pair in case I get a hole in them. I don't always buy these. If I have a second pair under the sink I don't buy anymore.

I use sponges to wash dishes, clean the stove, and wipe off counters. I know some people hate sponges. I like them. You might like paper towels and I don't. So let's just agree to disagree on the sponge situation ok. lol

I keep flossers all over the place. I got into the habit of flossing my teeth and now I need to do it a few times a day. I keep them in my car, purse, kitchen drawer and bathroom. I don't want to be running all over the place to take care of my teeth lol
The dentist told me on my last visit they haven't seen teeth this clean. I said well it's because of the preschool pick up line! They were puzzled. I said I floss my teeth every day while I am picking up G from school.

I also like to buy all our party supplies - plates, napkins, utensils, decorations, gift bags, cards. These things are just as good as buying them from Target, but the price is so much less. There are times I will order specific themed decor for the boys birthdays from Amazon, but for regular colored decor I buy it from the Dollar Tree.

I try to stock up, so I only go every 2-3 months. It saves me time and money. I tell the kids they can pick out 1 item while we are there. They can pick ANYTHING in the store they want. This of course makes G VERY happy! lol One day Cash was insistent on 2 balls...not 1 he picked 2 favorite balls. At first I was like no, you need to pick just one. Then I thought come on Becky it's $1 LOL

Check out your local Dollar Tree the next time you are near one for your daily essentials!

Budget Friendly Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Mother's Day is right around the corner and I am sure some of us could use some budget friendly ideas. To be honest I am so sad about not getting a school made mother's day gift from school this year. I cherish all those gifts made at school!

George has been asking me what color and kind of flowers I want. He said we are going to need to buy you some flowers soon. I am guessing him and Art have been having some conversations about mother's day. I told him I would like pink tulips. He asked you don't want pink roses? lol

I am not really a flower type person. They are just going to die, so how about getting me something off my Amazon wish list, another pair of the Birkenstock plastic knock off sandals from Target, or a day of no cooking. I told Art not to get me anything this year. I have everything I want or need.

Here are some ideas that you could share if someone asks what you want.

Color Street

I absolutely love Color Street. I can put a set of nail stripes on and they will last me 10-14 days. However I did learn they will not last if you decide to play Lego's and start pulling them apart. I have a couple chips on 2 nails from my Lego building! It was worth it! My favorite color is Swiss & Tell a white color! It's my go to that I wear almost every day.

Target Plastic Sandals

I bought these sandals to be my "slippers" around the house. I am going to buy a second pair to wear outside of the house. They are soooo comfy! I wanted to buy the Birkenstock plastic sandals, but they are $45 for plastic. I happen to find these at Target for $15. My cousin then told me she bought hers when sandals were 20% plus her 5% Target Card discount, which made them around $9.

They come in black, silver and white. I have the white ones. I think I will buy another pair of the white. Hey I can bleach them if they get too dirty right. lol

Tie Dyed Tank Top

Tie dye is all the rage right now. I like the colorful subtle tie dye. I do not like the really bold red, blue, yellow, green colors.

MODARANI Sleeveless Tank Top for Women Casual Loose Fitting Shirts V Neck & U Neck Tunics Floral Printed

Camo Leggings

Colorfulkoala Women's High Waisted Yoga Pants 7/8 Length Leggings with Pockets

I have a pair of the Colorfulkoala black leggings that are AMAZING! I love them! I would like the black and green camo ones. These are the most comfortable leggings! I love that they are high waisted and 7/8 length. I have the hardest time with regular leggings being too long on me. I do not want to be bothered folding them under, so they aren't bunchy. These are perfect and hit right at my ankle.

Mother's Necklaces

I buy my mother's necklaces from either Mac & Mia or The Silver Wren. Both of these small shops are on Etsy. I have numerous necklaces from each of them and they are amazing quality. I do not take my necklaces off for showers and they have not tarnished. You could not go wrong with either small shop for yourself or a gift. I have sent these necklaces for gifts too!

Go Ask Your Dad Tshirt

I think every mom needs this tee for mother's day!!!!

Comfy Pajamas

My mom bought me these pajamas for Christmas. They are so soft, comfy and perfect for hot Texan weather. I have been wearing these a lot of mornings during this pandemic. They are just perfect to lounge in!

Sleep Eye Mask

If you are going to get some comfy pajamas a sleep eye mask would be perfect to go along with them! This pink silk eye mask is perfect for a mother's day nap! Naps are one of my favorite thing thing on Sunday.

Do you have a wish list for mother's day? What is one of your favorite gifts you have received in the past? You still have plenty of time to order the perfect gift for that special person who deserves to be celebrated!

Sensory Bins

Last summer I created a sensory bin for G with some items I found at the Dollar Tree. Summer in Texas is soooo hot, so we spend a lot of our days indoors. Nap time can get tricky. I don't like G to watch tv while Cash is napping. I am fine with him watching a short show, but I do not want him to spend 2-3 hours in front of the tv. I also like to be able to rest some during this time, so I needed something that would keep him busy. A sensory bin was a perfect thing for G. He can use his imagination and it's also a quiet toy.

You could also find a lot of these items at Walmart or Target pick up to avoid going to the store during this pandemic we are going through right now.

I spent around $10 to create this sensory bin. There are sensory bins on Amazon, Etsy and other various sites going for $30+. By creating your own you can do it budget friendly and create it based on what your child loves.

We used a bag of beans and glass beads as our base in a clear plastic bin. Get a bin with a lid! You will want a lid to store this box up high if you have little ones.

G loved helping create this box. I also bought a bag of letter beads to mix in. This way you can also make it educational, by asking them to spell their name, find certain letters etc.

A bug catching set has been a lot of fun! He uses the scoop and the net to scoop up beans or to put some of the animals inside as he catches them.

We made this sensory bin over 9 months ago. G still loves to play with it! Cash has now started to play with it with supervision. This is not my favorite toy for toddlers because they like to dump beans all over the house. It becomes a huge mess and it's not a relaxing toy for a mom. lol It is a great sensory toy for toddlers, but you just need some patience when you pull this out!

You can be so creative with sensory bin themes you would like to create for your kids!

If you make a sensory bin let me know what kind of ideas of you come up with!

Gallery Wall on a Budget

One of my favorite bloggers Veronika's Blushing did this AMAZING gallery wall in her home. You can find her blog post HERE. When she posted the gallery wall it was around the time we were listing our house and planning to move to Texas. I decided in my next house this was the type of gallery wall I wanted to do. It was clean, crisp and beautiful!!!

When we looked at our house I immediately thought of 2 places to do the gallery wall. I started planning to do one. I loved the frames Veronika used. She got hers at Target HERE. I put a lot of thought into those frames. I have all silver or brushed nickel hardware in my house. I love the gold frames, but I was concerned with having large statement gold frames with silver every where else. Also the cost was another reason I just wasn't sure I could go for them.

Walmart has REALLY stepped up their game with their home items. I have bought a few things from them for the new house. I bought this bench for my mud room. It is very sturdy and adorable! I also bought this desk which matches the bench. We have the desk in the mud room too. The mud room is very large, so I wanted the items to match. The colors of both items are gray and they go together well. The description of the names isn't the same online. I feel they might have had a different option for the desk when I bought it months back. Anyhow these items are great quality!

I started looking for frames all over the internet. Amazon, Walmart, Target, Kohls etc. I read a lot of reviews to see what people were saying. I wanted to keep the gallery under $150. The size of the frames I wanted to use if I went with the Target frames it would cost me around $300. Walmart had THESE frames for $10.99. I was able to get all 9 frames for under $100. The frames I bought from Walmart are AMAZING quality! If you bought them from any other retailer you would spend $25 and up on them.

The frames sat in an enormous box in our guest room for a month. The thought of measuring and hanging them was daunting. I ordered all the pictures except one. I had Cash's pictures taken, so I wanted to put one of his new pictures in a frame. I was talking with my friend Krystal and she mentioned using these Command Strips to hang pictures. Using the strips no longer sounded like a daunting task trying to hang 9 frames. I ordered the strips from Amazon. Then I came down with strep throat and the project got pushed back another week or so.

One day during nap time I decided it was time to just bite the bullet and hang the pictures. The huge box kept George entertained while I took all the frames out of their packaging, put the pictures in the frame, adding the command strips and arranged them how I wanted them to be on the wall. Laying them out of the floor really helped give me a visual of how I wanted them on the wall. I moved certain pictures around and was able to determine the order before applying the strips on the wall.

I used a level to make sure each picture was level and to measure the space between each frame. It was so easy to do! It took longer to take them all out of the packaging then it did to hang them. It took me maybe 10 minutes max to hang them even with letting G climb up and down the step ladder a couple times. The entire project took me around an hour and a half from start to finish. I was able to sit down for about 10 minutes to enjoy the amazing gallery wall before Cashy woke up from his nap.

I absolutely LOVE the final results!!!! I sit in my living room and love look at the gallery wall at least once a day. This is one of my favorite projects I have done in any of my homes. I love the white frames! I think it really lightens up the wall and makes the pictures pop more!

I ordered all my pictures from Costco.Com  I have always used Costco to print my pictures. I find their quality to be great! I have pictures from them from 11 years ago that still are great quality and crisp. I spent maybe $10-$15 on the pictures.

Total cost of the project was around $132.
Frames were $98.91
Pictures were $15.00ish
Command Strips $18.00
