My Nanny has always been very proper when it comes to what clothes she wears. She has always been very aware of styles, seasons and etiquette. Nanny will tell you that you can never have too many pairs of navy or black shoes. Navy & black suits are a must have for every ward rob. I asked my Nanny to email me some of her fashion tips. I thought it would be fun to start sharing her tips. Below is a portion of an email she sent me a couple months back.
Fashions in general: if it doesn't feel good on and fit well. DON'T BUY IT OR WEAR IT. YOU WILL NEVER LOOK GOOD IN ANYTHING ILL FITTING OR UNCOMFORTABLE.
Wear styles that flatter you not the fad. If you are 5'4" or less the most flattering length is just below your knee (you should have your knees covered while sitting so do it enough below that you are not tugging to keep it down) Not too many decent folks are interested in you undies or cleavage for that matter.
DO WEAR BRIGHT OR LIGHT COLORS. THE STYLE AND FABRIC NOT NECESSARILY THE COLOR DETERMINE IF IT'S FLATTERING FOR YOU OR NOT. TAKE YOUR PICTURE IN IT. IT WILL REVEAL THE TRUTH.
Tight fitting clothes do not make you look slimmer - They make you look larger. Rolls of flesh are not a turn on whether you weigh 85 pounds or 685 pounds.
SHOES MUST BE COMFORTABLE. SPEND THE EXTRA AND GET GOOD ONES. THE WAY YOU WALK WILL HELP YOU LOOK SHARPER AND SLIMMER.
I have to agree with Nanny about taking a picture of yourself in an outfit. Try it out sometime. Take a picture of yourself in a full length mirror & see how the outfit fits. How does the outfit look on you? Would you post the picture of yourself in the outfit as your Facebook profile, blog or the front page of the newspaper? If you aren't willing to let everyone see you in the outfit then you shouldn't leave the house in the outfit!
